The motif part is made with Mizuhiki.

Mizuhiki is an ancient Japanese art from that uses a special code. The code is created from rice paper, that is tightly wound, starched to give is stiffness, and then colored. The ways of coloring inculude brightly colored Mylar (a very thin plastic), thin strands of silk, or simply painted.
